New client. Calls and says that he received a call from the county he lives in telling him they are going to be suing him unless he pays at least $15,000. He retains me. I reverse look up the number and it belongs to a woman in Pennsylvania. This county is in Texas. So the debt collector is using technology to hijack other peoples phone numbers for caller ID purposes. After I called the debt collector at the Pennsylvania number, mysteriously it stopped going to the debt collector and went to the woman who owns the number. I track down the debt collector and fax them my limited power of attorney. I am going to have these people for lunch. In violation of Federal law they: - Misrepresented themselves as government officials - Threatened to sue my client - Illegally used someone elses phone number - Failed to identify themselves as debt collectors when I called - Failed to inform me the call was being recorded. This is just for starters. I am waiting for them to call me back. Somehow I dont see that happening so I will call them and when I am done beating them down will contact the CFPB and FTC and file complaints and let the Feds go get them. Should be fun. I LOVE going on the offensive against bullies and scammers!
