New entrepreneurs meet obstacles that must be discussed. Language barriers can be an obstacle. We are finding when business owners with heavy ethnic accents meet and greet people in person there is little to worry about. There is something about meeting people in person that makes communication easier. Looking into a person’s eyes, shaking their hand and seeing their smile and mannerisms makes face to face communication much easier for many. However when it comes to phone communication it is a completely different story for many. Too many customer service operators shy away from returning calls to voice messages that are difficult to understand or foreign to them. Customer service operators speak with hundreds of people each week and give the less stressful conversations priority. Customers can also make initial rash judgments based on thick ethnic accents. I am suggesting that clients with thick or heavy accents break the electronic ice by using a fluent American sounding voice for first impression voice mails and messages to make the initial contact. I also suggest using e-mail and texting as much as possible. It is less stressful for customer service and for potential new clients as well as continuing communications with American vendors with little patience, compassion or baseless judgment. I personally find my clients with close ties to their heritage are the easiest to communicate with on a business and personal level weather from another country, Boston or the Deep South ;-).
