New faces at the Academy: Liverpool have announced a number of new appointments at their world-renowned Liverpool FC Academy where players including Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen were developed. Alex Inglethorpe, who joined the Academy in November 2012 as the U21s manager, is the new Academy Director responsible for developing an environment where players and coaching staff thrive. The 42-year-old, a striker with Watford in the early 1990s, will be responsible for the style of play ensuring the Academy is mirroring the first team philosophy in all aspects of technical and tactical coaching. Nick Marshall, a UEFA pro-licenced coach who has previously worked for Barnsley, Leeds and Nottingham Forest, joins the club as Head of Academy Football Operations. He will work closely with the coaching staff to ensure they have all the support they need to deliver world-class coaching. Liverpool have added a new position to the project - Head of Academy Business Operations - which will be filled by Andrew Powlesland, who has a wealth of experience in sport operations and joins from the South Bank University in London. Powlesland will ensure the Academy is running effectively from an operational perspective with responsibilities for the Academy facilities and operations, which includes coordinating support services such as welfare, education, human resources and administration. Other appointments at the Academy include Pepijn Lijnders, the new coach for the U16s. Pepijn joins Liverpool from FC Porto and previously PSV Eindhoven. Michael Beale takes over as the U21 coach and former Academy player Michael Yates returns as the coach for the U6 – U9 teams. Commenting on the appointment, Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre said: Liverpool FC Academy is known around the world for developing some of the best football talent over the last two decades. This new structure will help us build on the success we have achieved so far. “Not only will we continue to produce outstanding players who uphold the club’s values, we will ensure they have the best environment and work with best-in class coaches and support staff.
