New in the cinemas today: The reluctant Fundamentalist (IMDB 6.5, Rotten Tomatoes 54%, 69% liked it). Stars are Liev Schreiber, Kate Hudson and Riz Ahmed. Thriller about a Pakistani man in a conflict between his dream, a hostage crisis and the call of his family’s homeland.Tymon Smith (The Times) does not like it much. He says that the film is unable to translate the ambiguity of the novel onto the screen, although the performance of Ahmed is impressive. Theresa Smith (The Star) rates it at 3 stars. It seems she liked it but not enough to give it 4 stars. Riette Grobler (Beeld) rates it 3 stars. She says the director (Nair) should have been more subtle with her message. She also liked it. Leon van Nierop (The Citizen) rates it 3 stars. He says that the film battles to handle the broad themes it tries to address. He also mentioned the amazing talent of Ahmed. The Heat (IMDB 7, Rotten Tomatoes 65%, 79% liked it) Starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Action/Comedy about two cops than join forces to bring down a drug lord.Buddy-cop movie with girlie spin that brings to mind Lethal Weapon with lipstick (The Times). Rozanne Els (Beeld) thinks it is one of the funniest movies this year and rates it a 3. Theresa Smith (The Star) agrees and also gives it 3 stars. It is rude and crass, but funny. Leon van Nierop (The Citizen) also gives it 3 stars but warns that you must give yourself over to the obnoxious wicked sense of humor, or stay the hell away. Pain & Gain: (IMDB 6.6, Rotten Tomatoes 46%, liked 53%). With Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. Action Comedy based on a true story about body builders that gets caught up with criminals. Michael Bay’s latest film is dumb, shallow, deeply cynical and creatively bereft (The Times). Theresa Smith (The Star) gives it three stars but thinks it is rubbish (the ick factor of the violence undermines all the competent technical effort). Similar to Domino. Marthinus Koekemoer (Beeld) rates it 2 stars recons it is more pain than gain. Leon van Nierop (The Citizen) also gives it 2 stars. He says it is a blatant celebration of machismo and masculine superiority.
