New laws to tackle British jihadists The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has said she will announce a new three-point plan to counter British Muslim extremists in an attempt to curtail the activities of radical preachers whose extreme rhetoric currently does not constitute a crime. While details of the plans have yet to emerge, the Telegraph believes the new power will be designed to restrict extremists’ behaviour and language. If the order is disobeyed, it could result in a criminal conviction carrying a jail term. Mrs May has also revealed that she will make it illegal to join extremist groups that preach violent views, but are not yet directly involved in terrorism. Meanwhile, David Anderson, QC, has called for stricter controls on terror suspects in Britain. He is urging changes to Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (Tpims) to make them more effective, amid fears hundreds of British jihadists are returning home from Syria and Iraq.
