New objections to Lutheran Church site’s development faces new objections THE family trying for more than a decade to transform a dilapidated warehouse on the historic Lutheran Church site in Strand Street has warned that the structure could collapse unless it is rebuilt. A public comment period for the development proposal by the Augoustides family, who own the five “disjointed” erven of the warehouse complex, closed last Saturday. And the family are hoping that after 10 years of applications and appeals, they will get the approval they need from the City of Cape Town to go ahead next year with the R20 million development. But the Habitat Council, Captrust and the Greater Cape Town Civic Alliance have produced a petition to stop the development, which they say would destroy the character of the Lutheran Church and the warehouse, which was designed by Martin Melck and built in 1767. More than 1 000 signatures supporting the objection were collected. The Augoustides had to amend their 2010 proposal for a four-storey glass structure, after objections about its potential impact on the architecture in the area. The current proposal is one of several applications made by the family to Heritage Western Cape and the municipality since 2004.
