Katra, located in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains, serves as the base camp for pilgrims to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. A part of the Reasi District, Katra is located 50 kms away from the city of Jammu. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is situated in Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus. One of the largest cities in India with a non Hindu majority, Srinagar is famous for its gardens, lakes and houseboats. Well-known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits, Srinagar is also the headquarters of Srinagar district. The distance between Katra and Srinagar is around 300 kms. It will take approximately six hours on the road to reach from Katra to Srinagar. The easiest mode of traveling from Katra to Srinagar is by local buses. There are direct buses from Katra to Srinagar. But, they are mostly irregular. Jammu is only 50 kms away from Katra. Hence, the best way to travel from Katra to Srinagar is to first reach Jammu and then take a bus from Jammu to Srinagar. There are several J&K SRTC buses that ply to Srinagar from Jammu at an interval of 15 minutes. The distance from Jammu to Srinagar is about 260 kms. Plenty of buses are available in this route and it takes around 12 hours to reach Srinagar at a cost of ` 150 by bus. So, the economical way to travel from Katra to Srinagar is via Jammu. Travelling by bus is cheaper and is best suitable for individual travelers and youngsters. One can reach from Katra to Srinagar by car as well. Cabs like Sumo and jeep taxis plying from Katra to Srinagar are available on hire at Katra. It takes around 8 hours to reach from Katra to Srinagar. The cab charges ranges from `7 to `24 per kilometer, depending upon the type of car hired. Minibuses that ply from Jammu bus stand are more comfortable and even cheaper than Sumo cabs. People, who prefer comfortable journey, can hire a Toyota Innova for oneself, even though it might be very expensive. This mode of travel is recommended for families, kids and group travelers. There are no direct flights from Katra to Srinagar. As Jammu has an excellent airport, and is near to Katra, one can opt to board the flight from Jammu and fly to Srinagar. There are many daily flights from Jammu to Srinagar. At present there are no railway lines connecting Katra to Srinagar.
