Subject: Linking Tourism to Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Sectors as main Strategy towards Poverty Reduction in Zanzibar. Date & Time: Saturday 27 December 2014; at 4:00 pm. Venue: ZIRPP Office; Third Floor, behind Majestic Cinema (above ZANLINK) Abstract: Tourism sector is the main driver of Zanzibar economy. The sector currently contribute about 42% to national GDP and is well above agriculture, the traditional pillar of the economy, which is trailing at about 30% of the GDP. In recent years, Zanzibar has recorded steady growth of tourism as signified by increased direct foreign investment in tourism infrastructure and amenities and subsequent increase in number of tourists visiting Zanzibar. According to tourism value chain study(2010), the sector is generating about 75milion USD annually for which a lions share is paid to accomodation sector (about 55 milion USD). Unfortunately, the majority of these accomodation facilities are owned by foreign investors rendering tourism benefits mainly reaped by foreign establishments. The study also reveals that about 13.8 million USD is spent annually on food and beverages. Again an unfortunate reality, about 80% of vegetables, 20% of fruits, 60 % of meat, and 80% of milk consumed in the tourism industries is imported from outside Zanzibar. In his presentation, Juma Alsaady will argue that in order for tourism sector to contribute to poverty reduction strategies, there is an urgent need to link local economic sectors of agriculture, fisheries and livestock, keeping industries to the main sector of tourism, by increasing the market access and the amount and value of locally produced goods into the tourism sector. Tea, Coffee and Snacks will also be served freely. Please forward this message to anybody who may be interested.
