New publication! In a just-published Swedish study investigating autism in swedish twins the authors concluded that 50% of those who had an autism diagnosis also displayed four or more concomittant disorders. By using monozygotic and dizygotic twins one could discern that the genetics behind autism spectrum disorders are not specific to autism. This is corroborated by other studies who also show that the genetics behind autism affects virtually all common child and adolescent psychiatric conditions. This article introduces twin methodology in an easy-to-understand fashion and illustrates complex genetic associations on an individual level, something that has not been done before.
