New recruits begin training to take up border control duties at Dublin Airport - Farrell Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal and member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, Alan Farrell has congratulated the 42 recruits who have begun their careers in the Immigration Service yesterday (Monday). “I would like to congratulate the 42 recruits who have started their training with the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service of the Department of Justice and Equality. Once this training is completed, these 42 people will take up their new posts in Dublin Airport working on border control. This forms part of the civilianisation of Garda duties at the Airport which will allow for the Gardaí currently stationed there to focus on front-line policing in our local communities. “In addition to the 42 new recruits, and the 16 civilians who have already been tasked with border control duties, more civilian immigration officers will be assigned to Dublin Airport in the coming months, bringing the total number to 80. This will allow for 75 Gardaí to be released from border control to take up other policing work and boost the Garda presence on our local streets. Not only will this save roughly €4 million per year, but the importance of having a strong Garda presence in our local communities as a deterrent to crime cannot be underestimated. “The civilianisation of immigration services at Dublin Airport was announced by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD in September 2014 and I am pleased that it will allow for an increase in the number of Gardaí carrying out core policing roles in our local areas. In addition to this, 300 people have been recruited to An Garda Síochána with a further 100 to be recruited this year.
