New report shows why ‘business as usual’ won’t lead to universal primary or secondary education. Conclusion of the report highlighted: “The importance of non-formal education For many children and adolescents who are out of school, the foundational skills provided through non-formal education (NFE) that takes place outside the mainstream education system, often provided by non-governmental organizations, are indispensable in realising their right to a meaningful education. It can provide a pathway back to regular schooling or even, in some cases, a viable alternative. Findings from the Global Initiative on Out-of-School Children suggest that it is time for a greater recognition of the importance of non-formal or flexible learning strategiesfor children who have been denied a mainstream education, as well as its role as a crucible for educational innovation. NFE should no longer be seen as ‘second best’ by policymakers, practitioners and development partners.”
