New research published in the magazine, Pediatrics, shows that children with pets in the household are more likely to be healthier than children in non-pet-owning homes. It was shown they had fewer respiratory infections, ear infections, and less of a possibility of developing allergies in their lifetime. It has been proposed that there is an immunity boost in owning pets making children more likely to develop resistance to infections. In addition, children with pets tend to be more emotionally balanced. Similar research, on the other hand, has shown that pets that live in children-owned households are more likely to have infections because of negative stress impact on the immune system. Cats and dogs were also found to have more frequent gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal ailments, fractures, injured corneas, and were often found to be, as one veterinarian stated, nervous wrecks. Lol. I see it all the time and I feel bad for the animals.
