New review: THE PEARLS The Pearls Rijapov LP “Minimalist - TopicsExpress

New review: THE PEARLS The Pearls Rijapov LP “Minimalist psych” is one tag, but I like this Italian duo’s description of their music as “alternative dream pop” – it’s very apt. The Pearls are a side project of Stella of The Sensibles and Simona from Thee Bomb’O’Nyrics. Comprising of just electric guitar (often lightly phased) and drums with a vocal sound that’s sometimes submerged by the music, initially I found things too much of a drone; the minimalist approach not a sound I have often found engaging. However, persevere and these eight songs connect on repeated listening. A musical equivalent of a welcome foot spa after a long hike perhaps. All the songs follow the same pattern but ‘Away’ I found especially enjoyable. You find that the songs will weave themselves, siren-like, around you and draw you in. Best enjoyed in mellow or contemplative moods. Paul Martin/Shindig! Magazine (reviews round-up)
