New toys! My made-to-order swords have arrived! The lengths and shape have been ordered to Owari Yagyu Shinkage Ryu (Nagoya and central Japan regional Tokugawa preferred) sword style specifications. The Tachi / Katana (long sword) is slightly shorter for fast draw and close combat fighting, the Wakizashi (short sword) is slightly longer than usual, and the Tsuka (handle) is configured for 2 hand use. The Tsuka Kashira (end pommel) is rounded, as I still carry the sword kendo style (ie, the pommel is carried in the left hand, supported by the little finger around the pommel) and so I prefer that soft, rounded feeling rather than the flat-capped style. The Tsuka Ito (handle braiding) is Kon-tetsu (Iron blue) with Miyamoto Musashi styled Tsuba (hand guard) and bees as Menuki (hand grip devices) as Musashi is believed to have had. Another reason I chose bees as the Menuki is because bee in Japanese is Hachi, the same pronunciation for 8, which is the symbol of Nagoya (8=八).
