New vessel traffic system eyed for Malacca Strait 18-10-2013 The High Level Advisory Board (HLAB) has discussed the status of a new traffic systems project in Malacca Strait. During the meeting, a proposal suggesting the use of advanced communication technology to directly link Vessel Traffic Services to a ships bridge was presented. The plan involves the support of advanced simulation and decision-support systems. HLAB said the concept can revolutionize vessel traffic management by enhancing security and safety and helping the environment through optimisation of ships speed and fuel consumption. Shipping firms representatives, who are often reluctant about stricter management of shipping traffic, showed interest in the project. HLAB is comprised of personnel from pivotal maritime organisations and senior staff from marine authorities in Norway, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The second meeting was part of the research cooperation between Norway and Singapore. NewsLink Maritime News newslinkservices/
