New work from Patrick Makumbe, Creative Block participant ~ After successfully completing his advanced studies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Patrick Makumbe (b. 1978) returned to his native home Zimbabwe. In his work, he uses thick and free brushstrokes of acrylic paint to depict African figures, striving to subtly expose the pure emotions behind his subjects, who either unite as a body or disintegrate into lonely souls. Makumbe transposes the nations prevalent politics to everyday life, often eliminating rigid backgrounds and any associated context; thereby encouraging universal recognition from a diverse range of viewers.
