New year, lets clear up these 5 fitness misconceptions. 1. Doing ab exercises will not give you abs. A study at Texas A&M University found that it takes 250,000 crunches to burn 1 pound of fat. Aint nobody got time for that! Body fat is reduced from being in a consistent caloric deficit. Abs are like every other body part and only need to be trained 1-2 times per week. 2. Cardio doesnt target fat. Cardio burns calories and if you are in a regular caloric deficit, our bodies will pull from fat stores. Cardio only programs will also pull from muscle for energy and this reduces ones total metabolic capacity. Meaning youll have to continually drop calories lower and lower and lower for progress. Incorporating weight training will help preserve muscle and metabolism, which is a very good thing. 3. Lifting weights does not make you bulky. I love my Grandma, but she was 230 pounds and never lifted a weight. You only get bigger if you are eating to allow for growth. It is impossible to grow if nutrition isnt there to allow the muscle to grow. Lifting weights burns calories, just like cardio. In fact, lifting weights burns more calories over time than cardio does, so you can actually lose body fat faster with lifting weights, provided that you are in a consistent caloric deficit. Notice I didnt say weight? I said fat. There is a difference between fat loss and weight loss. We want fat loss, not muscle and fat loss. 4. Carbs do not make you fat. Excess calories is what causes weight gain. Excess proteins can cause weight gain and excess fats can cause a gain, too. Balance your nutrition and consume what is necessary for your personal metabolism, activity levels and lifestyle. 5. There is no magical supplement for fat loss. Supplements provide a help, they do work, but they do not work wonders. They are supplemental, a help, a 1-2% boost. Proper nutrition will always be king when it comes to personal progress, fat loss or muscle gain. Dont look to the supps store, learn what the foods you put in your fridge and pantry do and utilize them for best results.
