Newcastle Emlyn 13 Pencoed 8 The opening quarter was to cost Pencoed a place in the last eight of the Swalec Plate, the home side scoring all their points during this period, and despite Pencoed dominating the second period through their scrummage superiority, a malfunctioning lineout on the day proved to be their achillies heel. It was however Pencoed who threatened in the opening minutes, a clever kick from scrum half Kyle Barrett to the corner flag almost bringing a score. The home side then intercepted in their own 22 for right wing Llyr Jones to race away, and only a superb cover tackle from full back Tom Cross saved a score. Left wing Dan Davies then opened the scoring for Newcastle Emlyn with a penalty goal, and soon after Davies created the home try with a well balanced swerving run into the Pencoed 22 before kicking ahead for centre Howells to just get the touchdown within the twenty metre plus in goal area ! Davies added another 35 metre penalty goal and Pencoed somehow found themselves 13-0 down after 20 minutes. Despite the scoreline the Pencoed front row of skipper Keiron Moore, hooker Tom Drew, and emergent youth prop James Tredray were beginning to give their counterparts a torrid time at the scrum, setting the platform for a blindside raid through Barrett, Cross, and Glen Hiscocks, again a home interception metres from their home line coming to the rescue. Prior to the interval Adam Williams opened the Pencoed scoring with a penalty goal, and the home side led 13-3 at the interval. The Pencoed pack had the home eight in complete disarray at the opening scrum of the second period with their tight head shown a yellow card, young Tredray then caught the eye ripping the ball from the opposition at a maul. Unfortunately for Pencoed they continued to concede possession at the lineout with their continuity of play suffering as a result. That said going into the final quarter it was Pencoed who were taking the game to their 1st Division opponents, however they were unable at this juncture to gain a foothold in prime position to make their scrum dominance tell on the scoreboard, this due in part to some good clearance work from the Newcastle Emlyn back three. Going into the final minutes breaks from Gareth Prentice and Lloyd Ryland took Pencoed deep into the home 22, and at a resultant scrum the Pencoed pack drove the home side off their own ball for No8 Gareth Prentice to get the touchdown. Pencoed threw everything at their beleaguered opponents in the dying minutes but on this occasion it was not quite enough, and one could not begrudge Newcastle Emlyn their win, the West Wales side having coped with three yellow cards through the course of the match. Pencoed will reflect on a match which could have been won, but now turn their attention to League matters and on Saturday entertain Cwmgors at the Recreation Ground, 2.30 pm k.o. Match Report: T.R.
