Newcastle are reported to be showing an interest in Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen ahead of the January transfer window. The 27-year-old is struggling to force his way into the Gunners first team as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are currently Arsene Wengers number one central defensive partnership. Vermaelen is concerned his lack of action could result in him being left out of the Belgium squad for the World Cup next summer and is keen to get some games under his belt. Newcastle are on the look out for a new central defender as doubts continue to surround the future of Fabricio Coloccini and Vermaelen has emerged as a target. Wenger is not willing to sell on a permanent basis and he will also be reluctant to let him go on loan unless he can draft in a suitable replacement first.
