Newcastlewest Weekly Notes: U21 FOOTBALLERS MAKE IT 3 FROM 3 U21 FOOTBAL Rounds 3,4 Newcastlewest.........0-12 Oola...........................1-4 I hear the train a comin Its rollin’ round the bend And I aint seen the sunshine Since I don’t know when Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash At a dry Martinstown on Friday evening last at 8.30p.m. only a few die-hards were in attendance, Johnny Murphy refereed to the background of trains whizzing past to Dublin and Cork and with a quarter moon (on the corner of which you could hang your overcoat) watching as our lads and Oola entertained with a fast paced hard-hitting, competitive game of the modern kind a lot of hand passing, man-to-man marking, constant movement, huge pace, low kick passes into the full forwards etc. Very satisfying for the players, a possession game, maybe stereotyped maybe one dimensional, Gaelic football according to Mickey Harte. Puke football according to Pat Spillane. Our lads have pace, skill, composure, physical strength and they play this possession game well. They had to be a their best on Friday. Oola are good footballers, they’re fast, in your face, skilful and not averse to hitting hard. They troubled us in the opening 10 minutes but didn’t make possession count where it matters, on the scoreboard: they missed from frees and play. Left off the hook we scored 0-3 (Iain Corbettt 0-2, Jamie Lee 0-1), to their 0-1 in the first quarter. Iain was outstanding for the entire game, and the game’s man of the match, but every player played his part, working hard, doing the necessary marking, making the passes, supporting the player in possession etc. At half time we were 0-7 to 0-2 ahead, points 4, 5, 6 and 7 came from Iain (18), Gavin Riedy (21), Martin Madden (23), Ryan Clancy (25), all good scorers. A minute into the second half Oola closed the gap to 0-3, However, 11 minutes later we were at 0-11. Excellent interplay, support play etc creating opportunities for Jamie (32), Michael O’Leary supporting from centre back (29), Paul Hannon off the outside of the boot (41) and Iain (42). When Jamie kicked his 3rd and the team’s 12th point at 50, our 3rd win on the trot seemed assured. Manager Declan Brouder began to empty the bench. The fight hadn’t gone out of Oola however. Pressure was rewarded with a goal at (52). A point from a free followed and suddenly it was a 5 point game and the Oola tails were up! However, our lads refused to panic, held their nerve, composure and possession, weathered the storm and at the final whistle were well in control playing ‘keep ball’. An excellent win therefore with Iain Corbett and Michael O’Leary players of the match, Michael Mulcahy not far behind, James Stack busy and effective in the second half. All the players were taking their cue from Iain and working hard, as all must in an A team game if there is to be a success (Mickey Hart’s mantra and the gospel according to Brian Cody also). Of course all is not rosy in the garden and there’s plenty to do in training if the county is to be captured. Michael Angelo knew this “Trifles make perfection, perfection is no trifle), so did Paddy Kavanagh “Forget the men on Brady’s Hill Forget what Brady’s boy may say For destiny will not fulfil Unless you let the Harrow play” So no complacency then and back to training, where plusses and minuses will be analysed and plans put in place for next Friday’s (we think) Round 4 v Feale at Neville Park at 7.15pm (but check). Team: James Stack, Eoin Normoyle, Michael Mulcahy, Brian O’Sullivan, Joey Healy, Michael O’Leary (0-1), James O’Sullivan, Iain Corbett (0-4), Gavin Riedy (0-1), James Corbett, Jamie Lee (0-2), Ryan Clancy, (0-1), Aaron McCarthy, Cian Sheehan, Martin Madden (0-1). Subs: Paul Hannon (0-1), Brian Hennessy, Jason Dowling, Gary Shanahan, Peter Shanahan, Jordan Power. PRIMARY SCHOOLS Cumann na mBunscol. Interdivisions, Sarsfield Semi Final. CAMOGIE Minor Co A championship Round 4 Newcastlewest...........2-7 Emmets......................2-6 Sarah Corbett (younger sister of Iain and James) and Karen O’Leary (younger sister of Michael) were on board and playing their part as the Newcastle West minor camogie team made it 4 wins out of 4 games played in the Co. A. Championship. They are now into the semi final. CUMANN NA mBUNSCOL FOOTBALL Division County Championship Semi Final Recent winners of the west title beating Abbeyfeale Boys NS, the Courtenay trained by teachers Diarmuid O’Connor and Shane Kelly and backboned by many of the club’s U12 team take on Monaleen at UL on Tuesday November 26th at 12.30pm. MUNSTER CLUB HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS Senior and Junior Na Piarsaigh...........0-20 Passage.......................3-9 Feenagh/ Kilmeedy...................2-8 Kenmare Shamrocks.................0-9 Na Piarsaigh progressed to the final, disproving the belief that “goals win matches”. On the other hand Kenmare outscored Feenagh/Kilmeedy in terms of points but Feenagh/Kilmeedy made up the deficit with goals proving that “goals do win matches” and are into the semi final. Great for Limerick hurling, well done, best of luck to both. INTER COUNTY FOOTBALL Congratulations and best of luck to Declan Brouder, manager of our U21 football team who is selector with his namesake, newly appointed manager John on the Limerick senior football team for 2014. He brings plenty of experience as player and mentor to the job as Limerick, probably in transition, seek to consolidate/improve on their Division 3 position in the league and break the stranglehold of Cork/Kerry on the Munster championship. It’s brave men who take on a job that promises little in terms of cups/titles won and well done to both. Hopefully while selecting, Declan can pick former and current Drom/Broadford managers John and Mike Fahy’s, also a selector, brains and show us how to beat the current county champions in a Limerick championship final. INTER COUNTY SENIOR HURLING TJ and Donal the dream team? Time will tell but best of luck to T.J. Ryan and Donal O’Grady as they attempt to end a 41 year wait for Liam McCarthy. Both were outstanding hurlers in their own playing days. They worked well together as manager and selector in 2011 and have a lot of managerial and coaching experience. NIGHT AT THE DOGS FUNDRAISER The club thanks all who supported in any way last Friday’s well attended and enjoyable Night at the Dogs fundraiser at the Limerick Greyhound Stadium. Thanks to those who sponsored the races on the 12 race pro-gramme, to the many nom-inators, to all who sponsored ads on the programme, to all who attended, to those who bought tickets and to all who supported the raffle. Without this generous support (especially welcome and appreciated in these cash-strapped time) the club would struggle to survive and do what it has been doing since 1887 ie promote hurling and football in the parish of Newcastlewest. In thanking all who supported the Night at the Dogs fundraiser, we congratulate the club officers, the committee, the various people who organised the fundraiser, promoted it over the last 2 months or so and worked hard to ensure its success. The club owes them a big thank you and well done to all. PRESENATION OF MEDALS The Night at the Dogs Fundraiser was made more special by the presentation of medals to the various teams who won county and west titles in 2012, making it one of the club’s most successful years. Limerick senior hurler Declan Hannon did the honours and receiving their medals were the junior B footballers – West and County Championship winners; U21 footballers – Premier County Championship winners; intermediate hurlers – West Championship winners; U21 hurlers – West Championship winners. With the senior footballers making the County Final, losing in a replay, the U14 footballers winning Feile Peil and County Championship and the U16 footballers winning the Premier County title, 2012 was indeed an annus mirabilis and well done to all involved. 3rd Annual Mass for deceased members of the Limerick G.A.A.
