Newly appointed freeholder tosses common sense aside At Tuesday’s Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting, Democrat Carlos Mercado was appointed freeholder. In his first major act, he voted in favor of closing the doors of the Board of Social Services offices in Vineland and moving about 250 jobs out of the city. It appears Mr. Mercado didn’t think residents and businesses in Vineland suffered enough through the recent Cumberland County tax increase. Adding insult to injury this is a move that will cost Cumberland County taxpayers an initial estimate of $25 million, which does not include moving costs and building repairs. Considering the building that currently houses both the Board of Social Services and Work Force Development was offered to the county for $9 million, it appears Mr. Mercado chose to toss common sense aside in his first major act as a freeholder. I did ask Mr. Mercado for the position of the Board of Social Services and for some input as to its discussions; he responded that he did not want to engage in a conversation with me. Residents of Cumberland County, and specifically residents of the city of Vineland who are losing the only county service agency located in the city, deserve answers. Mr. Mercado why did you vote to hurt the local economy in Vineland? Mr. Mercado, why did you vote to support a scheme that will hurt county taxpayers with yet another tax increase? Mr. Mercado, do you even care about the senior citizens and Vineland residents in desperate need who will now have to find alternate means of transportation to have access to the services currently provided in Vineland? Unlike Mr. Mercado, I assure you that when elected I will always side with common sense. William “Bill” Gonzalez Cumberland County Freeholder candidate
