Newroz Festival (Kurdish New Year) 21 March 2714 The most important festival in Kurdish tradition is Newroz. Newroz means New Sun and New Day and is celebrated during the spring equinox on March 21st. There are many explanations for the origins of Newroz with records of the spring festival found as early as 3,000BC. The festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, the celebration of new life and freedom from oppression. The origins of this festival date back 5,000 years. Due to cultural oppression after the division of Kurdistan, Newroz has not been openly celebrated by the Kurds until very recently. As the Kurdish community became more established in Plymouth they started to celebrate Newroz openly again and the festival has become a vehicle to campaign for human rights and freedom from oppression. Every year the Plymouth Kurdish Community celebrates of the Kurdish New Year party! The evening will be filled with live music, dancing, food and drinks and various performances. There will be special guest such as the lord mayor, MPs and other Organisation. This event is a significant day for the Kurdish community and a spectacular as many of the women will be wearing the very colourful traditional dresses draped in sequins, tassels and silk. Another pinnacle moment of the evening is the dancing, a defining characteristic of the Kurdish community where all will join hands and bounce along to the erythematic sounds of the live drums and vocals. This project is best opportunities for Volunteers.
