During this week, CMV inspectors will be checking brake systems on trucks and buses across the country. From the CVSA press release, inspectors will be looking for loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components. In addition, inspectors will check the antilock braking system indicator lights. As needed, measurements of the pushrod stroke will be taken. Any trucks found to have defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will be placed out of service. Ten undisclosed jurisdictions will also be testing overall braking efficiency using performance-based brake testing equipment. All brake checks during the campaign will be Level IV inspections. In some cases, Level I inspections may be conducted. Back in May of this year, the spring brake check took 9.5 percent out of service for brakes out of adjustment; 8.5 percent out of service for brake component violations; and 15.2 percent out of service for any type of brake violation, according to the CVSA website.
