News February 21, 20 SCHINDLER IN CHINA Schindler has announced three new partners that have contracted with the company to supply products and technology for building projects in emerging Chinese cities. First, the Chongqing Lifan Centre will feature prominently in the local skyline of the Chongqing’s swiftly developing Central Business District. With towers reaching 42 stories, the residential complex will include 22 Schindler elevators, of which 12 are Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators. The Changsha YunDa Central Plaza is already under construction in the capital city of Hunan Province in south-central China. To become a showpiece in the urban center, the 65-story multiuse complex will feature 33 Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators. Finally, the Orient Building in Ordos City will include 13 Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators and become the first building in Inner Mongolia to incorporate Schindler’s PORT transit-management technology. L.A.’S METROPOLIS TO INCLUDE 38-STORY APARTMENT TOWER Metropolis, a planned mixed-use development in Los Angeles, will include a 19-story hotel and a 38-floor apartment building in its first phase, GlobeSt reports. New renderings of the Gensler-designed façades have been released. Construction on phase one is expected to start in the spring and be finished in mid 2016, and the US$1-billion project is expected to ultimately include retail and office space. Metropolis is a project of the U.S. arm of Chinese real-estate firm The Greenland Group, which is also developing Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, New York. OLD OTIS PLANT PART OF NEW CANADIAN INDUSTRIAL PARK Approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of a former Otis manufacturing facility in Hamilton, Canada, will be preserved to house offices in a planned industrial park, the Hamilton Spectator reports. Home to Otis at the turn of the century, then to auto manufacturer Studebaker, the 26-acre brownfield property is set to be redeveloped following an environmental assessment. February 20, 2014 GT PROVIDES 10 WATERPROOF ELEVATORS Global Tardif (FT) is part of a CAD5-million (US$4.56-million) contract to equip one of the world’s largest potash mines, located in Jansen Lake, Canada. In partnership with Regina Elevator & SNC Lavalin, GT will supply 10 waterproof elevators at a depth of 1 km below ground. GENESIS ELEVATOR IN GEORGIA PROMOTES SMITH Genesis Elevator Co., Inc., a commercial and residential mobility sales and service specialist in Kennesaw, Georgia, has promoted Stewart Smith to vice president/Commercial Business. Smith began his career in the industry in 2002. In 2009, Smith joined Genesis, where President Jay Arntzen said he was “instrumental in growing the commercial new-equipment business.” In his new role, Smith adds commercial service, repair and modernization to his responsibilities. Smith is a graduate of the University of Georgia and earned his MBA from Kennesaw State University. ECNY SEEKS 2014 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS The Elevator Conference of New York (ECNY) is seeking high-school seniors to apply for at least two US$5,000 scholarships. Any daughter, son, stepchild or grandchild of an ECNY member is eligible. One applicant is allowed per household, and ECNY will accept applications through May 31. February 19, 2014 LERCH BATES CHINA NAMES LI PROJECT MANAGER Lerch Bates China has named Matthew Li Elevator Consulting Group project manager. An industry veteran who previously served as senior manager of National Installation at SIGMA Elevator Co. and in various management roles at ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Li will provide a comprehensive range of vertical and horizontal consulting services to clients throughout the quickly growing Chinese market. Previous projects in which Li has been involved include the 492-m-tall Shanghai World Financial Center and the Beijing Subway. SNAPCAB, CORNING PARTNER SnapCab and Corning Inc. have entered a commercial agreement involving thin, lightweight, durable Corning Gorilla® Glass. SnapCab is to design Gorilla Glass into its modular wall-panel systems, which are used in residential and commercial elevators. This is the same glass that has helped protect handheld electronic devices for years and is currently used in at least 2 billion devices. Corning expects its use in interior architecture to enable new lightweight designs for elevator cabs, lobbies and conference rooms. HYUNDAI ELEVATOR EYES GLOBAL EXPANSION Seoul-based Hyundai Elevator Co. is laying the groundwork for overseas growth, with a particular focus on China and the Middle East, Yonhap News Agency reports. Hyundai Elevator has increased its stake in Shanghai affiliate Shanghai Hyundai Elevator Co. from 84% to 100%, and, in 2014, plans to establish new corporate offices in Tunisia, Turkey and Myanmar, bringing the number of foreign branches from seven to 10. The company is also expanding its South American presence, with a new manufacturing facility in Brazil expected to open by the end of March. February 18, 2014 KONE ACQUIRES ATHENS-BASED SERVICE COMPANY KONE has acquired Athens-based service company ThyssenKrupp Elevators Hellas S.A., strengthening its position in the Greek market and demonstrating confidence in the nation’s future. Stelios Anastasiades, KONE managing director for Greece and Cyprus, said the move shows the company’s dedication to addressing “people’s right to a smooth, safe, comfortable flow in and between buildings every day.” In the Greek market since 2004, KONE has more than 50 Athens-area employees, including those formerly of ThyssenKrupp Elevators Hellas. ELEVATOR COMPANIES HELP GRANT DISABLED TEEN’S WISH Access Solutions of Moss Landing, California, and Waupaca Elevator Co. of Appleton, Wisconsin, partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation on February 13 to fulfill the birthday wish of an 18-year-old Macedonia, Ohio, boy battling a central nervous system condition confining him to a wheelchair, FOX 8 Cleveland reported. The teen requested a home elevator to carry him to and from the basement, where he enjoys his train sets. The nonprofit foundation grants wishes to children and teens with life-threatening conditions. RIDERS AWAIT ESCALATORS AT INDORE RAIL STATION Riders will have to wait a little longer for escalators at the Indore, India, railway station, Western Railway General Manager Hemant Kumar said. On February 13, The Times of India reported on the project, which Kumar explained is being completed in phases. The first phase includes installation of escalators at 16 stations, while the second phase could include a moving walk, which has already been approved, at Indore. February 17, 2014 SINGAPORE’S MARINA ONE RESIDENTIAL CONTRACT LET Schindler has been contracted to supply 34 elevators for the residential towers of Marine One, to rise at the heart of Singapore’s new Central Business District. The 3.67-million-sq.-ft. integrated development will include two 30-story office towers and two 34-story luxury residential towers, linked with a retail podium and green space called “The Heart,” featuring waterfalls and rooftop gardens. Thirty of the elevators will be Schindler 7000 high-rise units. All will adopt Schindler’s Power Factor One regenerative-drive technology and integrated control system, Lobby Vision. The entire project is scheduled for completion by 2017. BEIJING TO INSTALL SUBWAY SENSORS By year’s end, Beijing plans to install more than 3,000 monitoring devices known as “black boxes” to elevators and escalators in its subway system, China Daily reported via the Mirror Evening News. The black boxes are outfitted with sensors connected to the Internet and maintenance workers’ mobile phones that issue alerts about machinery malfunctions and aging parts. The devices also analyze malfunctions. February 14, 2014 LARGE TURKISH ORDER FOR KONE KONE recently announced its reception of an order to provide 146 elevators to a large-scale residential development in Ankara, Turkey. Already involved in its early stages, KONE will supply the Sinpas Altinoran project with 97 N MonoSpace®, 34 N MiniSpace™ and 14 S MiniSpace passenger elevators, and one TranSys™ freight elevator. All units come equipped with KONE’s energy-efficient EcoDisc® hoisting machine. Further energy savings are to be achieved with advanced standby solutions and regenerative drives. KONE expects to deliver the elevators during 2014 and/or 2015, and the project is to be completed by 2020. IAEC FORUM REGISTRATION OPEN Educational presentations are being finalized for the International Association of Elevator Consultants (IAEC) Forum 2014. Registration for the April 21-24 event at the Sheraton in downtown Denver is now open and can be made at website. Among other activities, attendees will be able to visit three nearby buildings in which destination-selection control (DSC) is used. Each building’s DSC was installed by a different manufacturer, with Otis, Schindler and KONE products represented. ESCALATOR MISHAP IN AUSTRALIA Thirteen passengers were injured as a result of an escalator incident in a Perth, Australia, train station on February 8. ABC NEWS reported that three were hospitalized in the event. The Public Transport Authority, which is investigating the situation, reported seeing congestion at the bottom of the down escalator, which caused a bottleneck. It implied some of the congestion may have been caused by less-experienced public-transportation users. February 13, 2014 DRAKA HIRES OEM SALES ENGINEER Tracey A. Fackler has joined Draka Elevator as Sales engineer/OEM Division. He will be tasked with account management, sales and engineering coordination, and business development with the industry’s OEMs. Prior to joining Draka, Fackler worked for Schindler as a New Installation Sales representative. Prior to that, he spent 12 years in sales, marketing, engineering and management for Otis. He holds a BS in Economics from Nyack College in New York and an MBA from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. 200-PLUS EXHIBITORS AT IRAN IFTEX PressTV reported that the recently concluded IRAN LIFTEX 2014 saw more than 180 Iranian companies come together with 15 foreign companies at the Tehran International Permanent Fairground. The third such international exhibition on elevators, escalators, lifts, conveyors and related components and equipment included company presences from Italy, South Korea, the U.A.E., Turkey, Kuwait and India. Iranian officials stated the number of companies had increased by approximately 70%, compared to the previous year’s exhibition. HUDSON SPIRE PLANS UNVEILED Plans for developer Massey Knakal’s Hudson Spire have been revealed for the 108-floor building, New York YIMBY recently reported. To rise at 435-447 Tenth Avenue in New York City, the building’s planned 1,800-plus-ft. height would make it the tallest in North America. It would offer 1.22 million sq. ft. of mixed-use space. Expected to anchor a new business district, the nearby 7 Line of the subway’s 34th Street extension is set to open this year. The site adjoins the massive underway Hudson Yards project (ELENET 582). ESCALATORS INAUGURATED AT BANGALORE STATION Four escalators were inaugurated at the Banaswadi Railway Station in Bangalore, India, on February 8. The Hindu reported that the station was one among the 850 railway stations in the country now equipped with escalators.
