News: Petron Team Manager Hector Calma Admits Being Affected By Petronovela In his playing days for the San Miguel franchise in the PBA, Hector Calma was known as “The Director” for his coolness under pressure. But as the team manager of the franchise now known as the Petron Blaze Boosters, Calma admits being affected by everything that has been happening to the team. It will be two months until the next PBA tournament, but rumors are swirling about San Miguel Corporation’s flagship franchise, adding several new chapters to the saga fans have dubbed the Petronovela. “Apektado talaga ako. Ang dami ngang nagtatanong sa akin, pati na rin mga players namin kung ako pa rin daw ba ang manager,” Calma told InterAKTV in a telephone interview. “I just told the players to keep on doing their job, work hard in practice and prepare for the third conference. On my part, I will still continue doing my role as team manager hanggang sabihan ako. Pero sana sabihan na ako kung ako pa ba o hindi ang team manager para makapag-plano rin ako ng mga gagawin ko.” Calma, who was named one of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players during the league’s silver anniversary in 2000, quarterbacked the franchise in the late ’80s to early ’90s, helping the team complete a Grand Slam in 1989. He began his career as team manager in 2004 before moving in 2006 to the Beermen, who have since been renamed Petron. He admitted hearing rumors about his replacement from his inner circle. Calma’s revelations come amid the latest drama in Petron over its coaching situation. Unconfirmed reports came out on Monday that the Boosters were bound to replace Olsen Racela at the helm of the team. But Racela contended that he has not been informed of any such move, asserting he’s still coach of the team as far as he’s concerned. Like Calma, Racela was a star point guard for the Beermen during his playing days, spending 15 seasons with the team.
