News Release: Crews tackle fire in a refuse holding pit at La Collette. At 05:35 this morning the Combined Control Centre received a call from the Marine Centre advising us that they could see a fire and smoke from the area of La Collette. Two fire engines with nine personnel from Red Watch were dispatched and discovered the cause of the incident was a fire in a refuse holding pit, the size of the fire was approximately 20x10 metres. Once access was gained two Firefighters attacked the fire using a fire hose and quickly knocked back the fire, preventing it from growing and spreading. Due to the direction of wind, smoke travel was a consideration and the area was cordoned off by the SJFRS. TTS staff using a mechanical digger, assisted the crews by pulling out the rubbish to allow the water from the fire hose to reach the seat of the fire. An investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause of the fire.
