News Release January 23, 2014 Officers Rescue Man From Burning Vehicle On Thursday, January 23, 2014, at approximately 4:09AM, Officers West and Taschner, of the Appleton Police Department, responded to the report of a vehicle fire in the 100 block of S. State Street. The officers found the front of a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee fully engulfed by fire. They also observed an unconscious person in the driver seat of the vehicle. Officers West and Taschner approached the vehicle and were able to pull the occupant from the vehicle. They moved him to a safe location away from the burning vehicle. As the Appleton Fire Department arrived, small explosions were seen and heard from the burning SUV. With the assistance of the Appleton Fire Department, an investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted. Nothing suspicious was found on or around the damaged vehicle. A determination was made that the fire was likely a result of a mechanical or electronic issue with the Jeep. The individual pulled from the vehicle was a 25 year old, Appleton man. His vehicle had not struck anything. It was unclear how he had gotten to that location or why he had lost consciousness. He showed no obvious sign of injury. However, he was transported from the scene by ambulance to a local hospital for observation. Following treatment, he was expected to be released from the hospital. We commend Officer West and Officer Taschner for their decisiveness and bravery in approaching the burning vehicle to rescue the occupant. No further investigation is planned into the incident.
