********News Release******** The Kandiyohi County Sheriffs Office is issuing a dangerous ice warning on area lakes. Due to the warmer than normal temperatures in our area as of late, the Kandiyohi County Sheriffs Office has seen a rapid decline in the thickness of the ice on area lakes. Within the past 18 hours one vehicle has gone through the ice, and one person has broken through the ice near the New London Township access on the northwest shore of Green Lake. Both incidents were in very shallow water and no injuries were sustained. That access has been closed by the Sheriffs Office. The Crescent Beach access on the south side of Green Lake is not closed, but ice is very poor in the area from a vehicle that went through a week ago. The public should use extreme caution while venturing onto any lake in our area. Though lake ice is never completely safe, it is especially unsafe during this current warm stretch. It is recommended to advise someone of specific travel plans and times when going on frozen lakes. Travel with a companion, and keep a safe distance apart. Wear life vests or float coats, and protection from hypothermia. Carry ice picks or screw drivers tied together with a few yards of strong cord. Again, ice is never 100% safe. The following general good clear ice thickness upon travel should be observed: 4+ for walking 5-8+ for ATV and Snowmobiles 8-12+ for Cars and Light Trucks
