News Wednesday July 9th Commonwealth flags raised Three new flags were raised near Stornoway harbour yesterday as part of the celebrations for the arrival of the Queen’s Baton Relay in the Western Isles. The Commonwealth Games 2014 flag was raised alongside flags of Wales and St. Vincent and the Grenadines twinned with the islands as part of the Support a Second Team Commonwealth Games 2014 Legacy initiative. The Commonwealth Games are being held in Glasgow from 23rd to the 3rd of August, and the flags will be on display throughout this period. Gaelic music contribution The contribution of many island-born performers was announced yesterday as Gaelic cultural events for the Commonwealth Games Festival programme was outlined. Celebrations taking place across Glasgow over 15 days will include Breabach, The Mischa Macpherson Trio, Manran and Kathleen MacInnes. They will be collaborating with groups from across the Commonwealth and beyond creating unique and diverse projects not to be missed. Some of the acts will head straight to Glasgow from Stornoway’s Hebridean Celtic Festival, which also includes the only performance outside Glasgow of Boomerang, a show exploring indigenous relationships between Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand. It will be performed at HebCelt after first being shown at Womad in New Zealand and The Sydney Opera House in Australia. Smiling children More than 200 children were smiling on the first day of the Childsmile campaign on Monday, after each had fun at the dentist in Stornoway and Lochboisdale. 199 children had a Childsmile appointment in Western Isles Dental Centre in Stornoway, and 31 children had an appointment in Lochboisdale Dental Clinic in South Uist. Feedback was 100 per cent positive and dental staff were delighted with the encouraging comments from parents. YES campaign meetings Further open sessions run by the Yes campaign in the Western Isles are being held this week. The sessions will be at Ionad Stoodie in Point tonight from 7pm, at Carloway Community Centre tomorrow at the same time, and on Saturday at 11am at Ballalan Hall and Breasclete at 2pm. The final meeting in the current series is in Leverburgh on Tuesday evening next week.
