News coming from Spitfire radio 2 Oct 2013 Birmingham Brummies revving up for a dream finish Danny King leads the wayDanny King leads the way The wheel has come full circle for the Birmingham Brummies – the speedway club that came back from the dead to the brink of championship glory. Only Poole Pirates stand between Elite League success for the Perry Barr-based outfit, just six years after the club – which can trace its roots back to the 1920s – was reformed. The bike engines stopped revving in 1986 after a move to The Wheels site in Bordesley Green ended in tears. It was not until 2007 that speedway returned to Birmingham, launching a fairytale rise that has propelled the team into the 2013 Grand Final. Life-long fan Tim Beddows, who has stuck with the Brummies through thick and thin, said: “It’s the first time they’ve been top of the pile in their history. “But it’s a play-off situation, so the job’s only half done. “It’s an amazing achievement because they have such a small asset base. If it all goes well at Poole, they might shut the gates at Perry Barr.” The meteoric rise is testament to the graft and generosity of Brummies MD Alan Phillips. His company, Selco, is the team’s main sponsor. “It’s been tough,” he admitted.
