News from 99FM on 99fm.na/shikongeni-represents-namibia-at-art-show-in-glasgow/: ONE of Namibia’s most gifted visual artists and musicians, Papa Shikongeni, has been selected to represent Namibia at an art show organised for the Commonwealth Games. Taking place in Glasgow, Scotland from 19 July to 4 August, Shikongeni will be showcasing his cardboard prints. A total of 32 pieces will be displayed in the exhibition, 15 by Shikongeni and the remainder by other prominent Namibian visual artists. Alongside these prints, a series of the late John Muafangejo’s black and white lino prints will also be exhibited, which are the inspiration behind the modern cardboard printing technique. Shikongeni will also be sharing his extensive knowledge of the printing process through lectures and workshops alongside the exhibition. Starting his career as an apprentice under the famous Joe Madisia, Shikongeni has won many prestigious awards and toured with his work internationally. His cardboard prints have been exhibited around the world, through Sweden, Russia, Germany, Finland, Zimbabwe, Senegal and Botswana. It has been decades since Shikongeni, who will be flying out on 17 July, has been in the UK. The last time he was there was 1994, when he exhibited his solo show ‘Time and Mankind’ in southern England. Now returning twenty years later, Shikongeni said “it was an honour to be selected to represent the nation”. Equally gifted as a musician, Shikongeni is a creative in many fields and is passionate about passing on the arts for future generations. “Art is something our country is not well recognised for. People here must see the importance of art and pass it on to the next generation. Music and art are just as important as our sports,” he said. -The Namibian
