News from Auckland Council for FREE EVENT! Parnell Festival of Roses Dates: 16-17 November. Time: 10.30am-4pm daily. Location: Parnell Rose Gardens, Dove-Myer Robinson Park, Gladstone Road, Parnell. Cost: free. Website: This link will take you to the Parnell Festival of Roses web page. Event information Celebrate the first roses of the season at the 2013 Parnell Festival of Roses. Waitematā was the first local board in Auckland to adopt an accessibility plan. The board aims to make this year’s Parnell Festival of Roses accessible for as many people as possible. Activities taking place throughout the weekend include: Audio-described walks There will be two audio described walks for blind and vision impaired visitors at: • 1pm on Saturday 16 November • 12.30pm on Sunday 17 November. The walks will be facilitated by audio describer Nicola Owen. A staff member from Auckland Council Parks and Leisure Department will be on hand to provide additional information. Please ensure you register for the audio described walks. To register please contact Nicola on audiodescribedauckland@gmail Rudd “The Bugman” Kleinpaste’s talks in New Zealand Sign Language Radio and TV personality and renowned entomologist Ruud The Bugman Kleinpaste will be on hand sharing expert advice on all things gardening and bug related. His talks will be signed in New Zealand Sign Language at the following times: • Saturday 16 November from noon to 1pm and 2.30pm to 3.30pm • Sunday 17 November from 2pm to 3pm. Market and food stalls Browse the craft and clothing stalls and grab a bite to eat from the many food vendors. Kid’s activities The kids will love Ruuds famous bugs and there will be a variety of activities to keep them entertained including face painting, bouncy castle and fairy story telling. Live performances Soak in the atmosphere of the live stage with performances throughout the weekend. Travel information Getting to the event Public transport Parnell Rose Gardens is serviced by bus route number 703 which runs from Britomart Transport Centre to Remuera along Gladstone Road. Bus stop number 7648 is directly outside the gardens when coming from Britomart. Bus stop number 7657 is directly opposite the gardens outside the Rose Park Hotel for the return trip to Britomart. There is no drop kerb at this bus stop and there is no pedestrian crossing however there is a pedestrian crossing 200m further up Gladstone Road near bus stop number 7657. Please note that not all buses are wheelchair accessible so please contact Maxx to confirm what buses will be accessible on the day. Parking There is no public parking within the park during the event. There is on street parking around the area of the park except for part of Judges Bay Road which will have some parking restrictions in place. Mobility parking There will be reserved mobility parking at Fred Ambler lookout on Gladstone Road. Please be aware that the Fred Ambler lookout is 150m from an accessible park entrance and is up a mild gradient. Drop off point There is a drop off area located at the Gladstone Road entrance to the park. Getting around the event Entrances There are two main entrances to the park. The first is located on Judges Bay Road off Gladstone Road and the second is located further down Gladstone Road. Pathways There is a sealed driveway that runs between both of the entrance points. The driveway will give access to the food and craft stalls. The driveway will also give access to the path that goes to the entertainment area located in the Pohutukawa area in the north of the park. There are a number of other paths that go to other areas of the park and some may be difficult for wheelchair users due to the materials used on the path or their current condition. Tree roots make some paths uneven and overhanging tree branches may need to be negotiated. Given that the Festival is in a park some of the activities are on grass such as the main stage and the Rose Gardens. Toilets The permanent public toilets will not be in operation during the event. There will be portable toilets located on the main drive way and at the entertainment area. Both these areas will have accessible toilets. First aid St John Ambulance will be on site during the event and they will be located next to the Parnell Functions building.
