News from Pam Shaw, Head of School: Hello All, Mrs. Laura - TopicsExpress

News from Pam Shaw, Head of School: Hello All, Mrs. Laura Magistro recently informed me that she is retiring at the end of this school year. Mrs. Magistro has taught at CCDS for 27 years and will be most remembered for her innovative interdisciplinary projects like the Age of Exploration when her students built ships in the classroom and sailed the ocean blue together to discover new worlds. She also was instrumental in integrating robotics into the curriculum when her students did an archeology project in the Sahara Desert using robots, budgets, and the video recording resources in our Technology Center. These are the kinds of authentic learning experiences that students never forget. Mrs. Magistros commitment to implementing the most current educational research is evident in her work with students. Students in her class are asked to think about their own individual learning styles so that they can approach each learning experience with a self-reflective lens. She has often told me that her primary goals as a teacher are to discover and analyze the best methodology and classroom experience to help each student develop an understanding of their personal and preferred approach to learning, to feel confident to use that discovery to become their own advocates, and to understand they are responsible for their own life-long learning adventure. I am going to miss everyone at CCDS, most especially all the kids. I hope my “old” students, who drop by occasionally to touch base, will still think of me; I share many memories with them. I don’t know what my plans are for the moment, but I do know I will spend more time with my family, especially with my 3 year old grandson in Colorado. I am looking forward to the trip to Hawaii my husband planned for all of us to celebrate my retirement. While It’s the end to the joy of teaching children I’ve loved since 1972, it’s the beginning of a life that will also bring me another kind of joy. Thanks to all of you that contributed to that joy! When asked if she had any ideas on an appropriate retirement gift from the school, she stated that the best retirement gift CCDS could give her would be a chance to chat with CCDS alums to catch up on all their news. Our upcoming Alumni Holiday Reception on Saturday, December 20th is a perfect time to give this gift to Mrs. Magistro. Alums, faculty and staff, current and past parents, and CCDS friends are invited to stop by the Fairways Golf Lodge* on Saturday, December 20 from 4:00 - 5:30 to share their best wishes for her retirement. Please join me in thanking Mrs. Magistro for her 27 years of hard work and commitment to our school and to our students. Best wishes on your retirement, Mrs. Magistro! +++++++ *The Fairways Golf Course 1500 Rogwin Cir SW North Canton, OH 44720-4131 United States P: (330) 433-1880 fairwaysnc R.S.V.P. to [email protected] Pamela Shaw, MA, MLS
