If you: • Encourage your dog to use your neighbors property to do their business on • Shovel your dog poop over your fence into the back alley or out onto the front street for display • Think it’s funny to leave dog poop in the middle of the Participation Trail and wait to see someone step in it “You are probably a Dog Poop Redneck” Dog poop is not a desirable feature in any neighborhood. It is unsightly, smelly, poses a health risk to residents and contributes to pollution in streams, lakes and the water table. One gram of dog feces can contain 23 million fecal coliform bacteria that can cause stomach cramps, diarrhea, intestinal disorders and kidney problems in humans and other pets if ingested. Removing dog poop and disposing of it properly is a public health and safety issue. Responsible pet owners out there - keep up the good work, because you understand the importance of keeping your pet healthy and protecting the environment! Tips to becoming a responsible dog owner: • When taking your dog for a walk on a leash, take several plastic grocery bags with you to pick up your dog’s poop. Once the poop is in the bag, tie a knot in it and dispose of it in the nearest trash receptacle. • If you can’t bring yourself to handle the poop through a plastic bag, or cannot bend over, purchase a commercially made “pooper scooper” and use it. • If possible encourage your dog to relieve itself at home before and after a walk. Doing so saves having to deal with the mess anywhere else. • Feed your dog a healthy diet so your dog will produce less offensive poops. There will be less waste to pick up when your dog eats quality food with less filler. If you see someone leaving their dog’s poop behind, feel free to educate them on the importance of picking it up.
