News from State Bar Meeting Amarillo- The Bar Board of Directors - TopicsExpress

News from State Bar Meeting Amarillo- The Bar Board of Directors approved rules changes REMOVING the exemption for attorneys 70 years or older from the 15 hrs of annual Mandatory Continuing Education. They cited cognitive problems in older attorneys. This affects 7809 attorneys immediately and many more over the next 10 years. I argued against, saying 15 hrs of forced CLE would not help anyone except the Bar Treasury which is already full. I said if particular older attorneys were having problems they should be referred to a confidential assistance program such as TLAP and in the alternative the MCLE be free as the Bar 1. Has enough money 2. These people have already paid enough over their many years of practice. Some attorneys practicing at age 70 are doing so because of financial reasons- one senior had been financially devastated from cancer. Older attys probably arent working full time or making a fortune. Finally I mentioned that many societies respect and cherish their seniors. The vote was 39-1. I was the lone dissenting vote. The board then adjourned for a nice catered lunch and dinner tonight at the Big Texan.
