News from The Mews: Recovering from 8 days of painful tummy boo boos ..... after many, many, many, many hours in the ER a brilliant doc got to the root of the problem after running a gazillion tests. I have been prodded, poked, scanned, x-rayed, had beams of light and nuclear (YES, nuclear ..at least, that was written on the door of one of those rooms)...I think a Geiger counter may have been involved and am interested (if not convinced) to see if I will glow in the dark and for how long! Note to self: NEVER, ever, boast about how healthy I am.....any statement in that manner is guaranteed to humble me and kick me to the yawning jaws of the ER. Okay ....getting better..so...I am reading (research) some amazing books on The Battle of the Atlantic WW11. Sam has to be impressed by my increasing knowledge of the longest battle of the war. Brilliant facts trip off the edge of my tongue ... crush depth for a U-boat, the top aces of the wolf packs and how they ended (or not) their involvement. Conditions at sea (brutal)...fact after fact ..I can tell you all about life on board the Navy destroyers, life in the U-boats, the convoys, the strategies.....I can DAZZLE you with details My two favorites so far...The Hunters and The Hunted - German U-boats 1939-1945 which gives amazing information on the great Otto Kretschmer who allegedly torpedoed my dads destroyers on two occasions, resulting in my father being the only survivor on both those occasions after floating in the freezing North Atlantic for 14 days! My dad met the U-boat ace after the war. They met in London and my father said You bloody bastard as they shook hands! Turning the Tide - how a small band of allied sailors defeated the U-boats and won the Battle of the Atlantic ...brilliant book ...filled with amazing stories and knowledge. Shepherds Of The Sea among others.....wonderful reading and I am humbled by what humanity went through...on both sides. So...back to the research! Hopefully I can glean enough knowledge and understanding of what happened to my dad so as to write his story with as much detail as possible. Am busy trying to procure his service records from the British Government which should help me sort out a lot of what happened. xoxo
