News in Brief Carols in Kings Park Carols in Kings Park is this year coordinated by Councillors Lesley Young and Dayna Dennison and will follow a different format than recent years. “Rather than a concert style presentation, we wanted to get back to basics and make it a good old fashion sing-along. Our performers include the Latrobe Federal Band, Justine Barber, David Rockliff and Resonance. They will be leading the singing of well-known, favourite Christmas Carols for the audience to sing along with,” said Councillor Young. Drivers Sought Port Sorell Meals on Wheels are seeking volunteer drivers to deliver meals once a month. Volunteers would be required to pick up meals from Strathdevon, Latrobe then deliver them to up to 12 clients throughout the Port Sorell area. Christmas Carnival Keeps to 28th The annual Latrobe Carnival at the Latrobe Recreation Ground continues its now adopted date of 28 December in lieu of the formerly traditional Boxing Day. This change was implemented last year in an attempt to grow patronage to this day of wood chopping, athletics and cycling competition as part of the Sports Carnival Association of Tasmania Series. Gates open at 11.00 am with activities continuing through to 9.00 pm. Prize Incentives at Henley-on-Mersey Latrobe’s Annual Henley-on-Mersey Australia Day Festival at Bells Parade, Latrobe offers numerous opportunities to compete for some fantastic prizes in a variety of competitions throughout the day. Along with an ANZAC Biscuit and/or Mini Meringue competition there is also the Betta Boat Race; Sheaf Tossing; Gumboot Throwing; Nearest the Pin in Golf; Whip Cracking, Archery, Egg Throwing to name a few. Competitions with prizes of some significance include ferret racing (prize pool of $1,000); Triathlon (prize pool exceeding $1,000); Latrobe Art and Photographic competition (prize pool of over $2,000) and Wood Chopping competition (in excess of $20,000) A couple of these activities require pre-registration.
