News release from the UK Independence Party in Hemel Hempstead Media contact: Howard Koch tel: 07850 876020 UKIP attacks ‘unmitigated disaster’ of road works in Old Town Local businessman, Howard Koch, who chairs the Hemel Hempstead branch of the UK Independence Party, has spoken out about the road works in the Old Town, Hemel Hempstead, which he describes as “an unmitigated disaster”. The road closures and lack of pedestrian access have caused a massive downturn in trade in the high street. At a fiery public meeting in October, local businesses blocked the Councils attempt to close the High Street for 7 weeks. Dr Koch said: “My dental practice is in the High Street and I have experienced the disruption first hand. The Councils position is that because the road works are for the ‘greater good’, there is no liability for financial compensation, even if businesses go under! They have conceded and have offered a small one-off payment and reduction and deferment in business rates. This is obviously welcomed, but I feel that it is too little and too late. I believe that the Council may have misled the business owners in telling them that the Council is not financially liable. Councils have been sued in the past for compensation and UKIP Hemel Hempstead would like to meet those business owners interested in exploring a possible class action suit against the Council for financial compensation Dr Koch, who will be making a presentation at the business forum on 20th November 2013 at the Old Town Hall, invites interested parties to contact him directly ([email protected]), in the meantime.
