Newsletter I received from Dan Mangan today. Ponder these words...ponder this video. Check out his website and new album! Hello love, I’m at a highway road-stop, underneath a television spewing garbage. It’s a talk show that discusses and judges the lives of reality TV stars. This particular show is a circle-jerk of group-dynamic-moral-high-ground applause mongering where everybody in the audience gets to look at others and think “at least I’m not as desperate or despicable as them.” The show’s purpose is to hate the very thing that gives the show a reason to exist. I’d ask them to change the channel, but then it would be Ebola, ISIS, Ebola, ISIS, ∞. It’s hard to avoid the garbage. It’s everywhere, distracting us, keeping us in a state of suspended presence. When it comes to the media, it’s also hard to know WHAT is garbage. And, of course, one person’s garbage is another’s treasure. The world is complicated and I am just a morsel of sand that understands very little of it. From this vantage point, it seems strange or confusing to be promoting an album. It would seem trite, peddling a collection of songs, when there are so many very serious issues facing our species. Then again, in my life, the music of others has helped me process or face the chaos with resilience. Maybe art is a benevolent crutch with which we can stumble through the twisted and wrinkled sidewalk before us. Maybe it always has been. After having several years away from touring to ponder why I need/want to make music, the only sturdy answer I could come up with was that it helps me feel connected. It connects me to others and to myself. It gives me moments of focused awareness. And it allows me to communicate things that are hard to articulate through conversational language alone.... https://youtube/watch?v=3dAWPsrraBk&feature=youtu.be
