Next Saturday Ill greet my memoir students with renewed anticipation. Its always been an honor and a joy to create a place where stories can be shared without fear of judgment, and to witness each womans discovery that her story deserves to be told. But theres never been a better time than now for a mindful conversation about womens stories and the life-altering impact of speaking your truth for the first time. Lucy DeCoutere could have kept her story to herself. She could have listened to the voice within that said, Its not important, Its time to move on, No one cares, No one will believe you or Hell make you pay. Most women have heard those voices; many live with padlocks on their tongues. When Lucy DeCoutere defied the voice of shame, women flocked to say, Me too. Thats the power stories have.
