Next Up: Local writer/director/producer and actor Jason Bortz will present an interesting topic to attendees on Jan. 13th at the CFAA Actors Workshop: Concept to Craftsmanship, Page to Performance Jason will offer insight into the creative process from both the writer and actors perspective, discussing the process of creating well-rounded, believable characters with their own individual voices. The importance of subtext, interior monologue and words vs. intentions will be introduced, as well as common misconceptions between stage and screen performances--Jason will also touch upon the language directors must understand in order to inspire the best performances from their talent. Jason Bortz began acting at age 9, wrote his first play at 11, and booked his first commercial at 12. After attending college in Eugene, Oregon, he trained in Seattle with The Film School’s John Jacobsen, creator and host of PBS series The Artist Toolbox. Jason was a member of the Seattle Cinema Co-Op, pursuing filmmaking both on and off camera in commercials, films and movies of the week. He moved to New York to train at the National Shakespeare Conservatory before heading to Los Angeles, where he became a member of the Shakespeare and Friends Foundation, performing in “at risk” inner city schools for audiences never before exposed to live theatre. Jason is credited in film, television and a few video games, and has worked onstage in many plays—a sampling of which can be found on his Facebook or on the Internet Movie Database. Jason was a founding member of the Capital Film Arts Alliance in Sacramento and has served as a screener for the Sacramento Film and Music Festival; he serves as a guest screenwriting instructor for The Learning Exchange. In 2012, Jason introduced Roseville to Indiecon, a conduit for filmmakers and Hollywood connections, and founded the first Roseville Festival of Film and Animation, hosting industry artists from companies such as Marvel and Warner Brothers. Jason has been honored with several awards since moving to the Sacramento region, including Sacramento News and Review’s “Best Local Actor,” and Sacramento Film and Music Festival’s “Best Documentary” for a film shot in Africa. He received A Place Called Sacramento’s “Best Overall Film” award for the short film “Hope”, and recently earned a 2012 “Best Actor” Elly Award for his role in Stand Out Talent’s “Anything Goes.” Jasons screenwriting is represented by the Silver Bitela Agency, and he typically divides his professional time between writing scripts, coaching actors, and working as President of Stand Out Talent, a 501c3 organization dedicated to providing excellence in performing and production in live and media arts for all ages, alongside his wife Jennifer and children, Caleb and Clarity. 1st CFAA Actors Group Meeting in 2015 with Jason Bortz Tues.
