Next on STRAIGHT TALK AFRICA Wednesday, January 7th, 2015 [1830-1930 UTC] “2014-2015: Africa Year in Review & Look Ahead” Across Africa, 2014 was a year of major news events. Deadly terror attacks - and an even deadlier disease, left several countries reeling. The West Africa Ebola epidemic began in December of 2013 in Guinea. From there it spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal, with each nation facing enormous challenges in stopping its spread and providing care for patients. On April 14, Nigerian terror group, Boko Haram, attacked a secondary school in Chibok and abducted 230 school girls. Dozens managed to escape, but nearly 200 girls are still missing. In June, U.S. President Barack Obama announced the expansion and name change of his Young African Leaders Initiative, to the “Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.” In August, President Obama also hosted the historic U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the first ever major gathering of African heads of state. The leaders discussed the future of the relationship between the United States and Africa. Leadership on the continent came under scrutiny in 2014 with the October 8 appearance of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. It was the first time that a sitting president had submitted to the court’s summons. After several appeals by the Kenyan head of state, ICC prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, in December, withdrew the charges against Kenyatta. The October 26 death of Zambian President Michael Sata , triggered new elections, that are set for January 20. Zimbabwe and Nigeria are also slated to hold elections this year. Join us Wednesday, January 7th at 1830 UTC for this live one-hour television and radio call-in simulcast, when host Shaka Ssali and his guests discuss some of last year’s biggest stories and what impact they might have in 2015.
