Next week, Third Thursday Talk, 18th October: INTRODUCED BIRDS – A BLESSING OR A CURSE? by Michael Taylor. 7.30 pm at Kelston Community House, crn Great North Road and Awaroa Road. Free, and everyone welcome, koha to cover hall hire and a chance to connect with similar minded people over a free cup of tea or coffee. NZ was the last sizeable land mass to be settled by man and unusual in having no land mammals (apart from two bats). It is remarkable for the large number of deliberate introductions that have featured in the countrys development. As part of the settlement process man brought his domestic animals and farm stock including birds, along with pests and predators. Michael will cover these topics: Successful introductions of birds to New Zealand (39 species, yet Oz has only 20, often rare); Failed introductions to New Zealand (80 species!); What other birds might have been introduced? Why were so many alien species brought here? What is our attitude to self-introduced species? All birds will be identified individually with a selection of pictures, and the evening will finish with quotations from the diary of an Auckland ornithologist, and some poems to illustrate the cultural significance of birds in maintaining our cultural links to the Old Country.
