Next week Tuesday Im flying to Joburg to shoot a documentary about the cultural minoritisation of Black people in post-democratic South Afrika. So Ive decided that everyday for an hour or two, Im going to take time off from my academic schedule to read up on politics of identity post-1994. The problem is one: I am not finding anything written specifically about cultural minoritisation in a democratic dispensation in South Afrika. Im finding stuff on the impact of imperial devastation and colonisation on the traditional Afrikan society and such related literature, but absolutely nothing post-apartheid. The tragedy of Black society is that we are going to lose so much of our history not because settlers have colonised and bastardised Afrikan knowledge systems, but because through our failure to take the initiative of documenting even mere reflections of our own recent history, we are complacent in the affair.
