Next weekend I will be entertaining and educating visitors to the Cyclorama. It has been many years since I was there speaking to groups and I really look forward to “wading into it” and seeing old friends and making new ones. I never present a Gone With the Wind Tour in Jonesboro without mentioning the connections to the Cyclorama so to be there next week may provide me with a few minutes to look around, reflect and see if there are other GWTW stories and connections that I might have missed in my research long ago. Some days I get frustrated by the seeming lack of interest in the history of Atlanta and the State. I wish for more zeal from our elected officials and citizens. But frankly the less help one has in establishing a historic site the healthier the story. If a presentation is too “weak” to stand on its own it has a hard time ever becoming a strong force for tourism. So as brutal as it may sound, it may be best for each potential site to have to “pick its way out of its own shell” in order to claim a spot on the tourism map. Let us rally on the high ground.
