Nez Perce Trail Ride 2014 - Hetty Dutra: Yesterday was a sunny, warm day, and I took my horses, Shug and Cheetah out on trail. I concentrated on cowpaths. We have had only a sprinkle of rain, so the land is depressingly dry and sere. We crossed creeks (dry) and went up to a stock pond (dry) and I wish I had remembered my iPhone, because it was beautiful under the oak trees. Cheetah didnt always follow behind Shug, sometimes he would just barrel off the bank any place, rather than on the trail. The two of them play in turnout, but Cheetah has been beating up on Shug, so poor Shug has bite marks on his neck, and a very bad one on his shoulder, and all sorts of little scabs from Cheetah. Consequently, they arent going to be turned out together anymore. In fact, Cheetah & Shug will have Rambler in a turnout between them. Likely Ill switch Shug and Ramblers stalls, too. Im hoping Cheetah likes Rambler. I finished reading Lisa Woods books on her Long Rides. Very interesting. Makes me seem like a ninny, since she road 3,000 miles across the USA with just what she could carry on her horse! I was originally thinking 3 horses, one to ride, one to pack, and one to pack feed for the horses. That way, if something happened that I needed to leave one behind (like Marie in 1994), I would still be able to continue. Taking a clue from Mule, I was thinking the extra horse (Rambler) could carry two 50# bags of oats. In 1994, my horses had alfalfa pellets. Anyone have advice on the issue of how many horses and what kind of feed to pack?
