Nguyen was attacked as a communist by incumbent mayor of garden grove but he built a progressive coalition of chicano/latino, progressive whites, asian americans and blacks. there are not many blacks in garden grove but enough to make a difference in this race. I feel this is the model of progressive candidate winning mayor race in OC a progressive multicultural alliance. Hopefully Santa Ana will have a progressive mayor I feel the alliance that Nguyen built is something that can happen in Santa Ana but alliance building is key. Yea progressive democrats are happy in OC about Nguyen. He was also was helped a progressive garden grove/Long Beach alliance to get Lowenthal reelected as congressman of Long Beach and North Orange county/Garden Grove.Vietnamese are often in OC are seen as conversative but Nguyen is totally different a progressive democrat. I followed there ace every day when I was organizing in West Santa Ana. yea West Santa Ana tends to be more connected with garden grove than rest of Santa Ana that has been the case in recent years especially with growing influence of Asian americans in West Santa Ana.
