Nhan Dan – Localities across the nation are preparing all necessary measures to deal with the Ebola epidemic, currently raging in West Africa, in case it hits Vietnam. At a meeting on August 20 with the Hanoi Health Department on the prevention and combating of the Ebola virus, Deputy Director of Dong Da General Hospital Nguyen, Thi Bich Van, revealed that the hospital has established quarantine areas with relevant equipment, medicines and means of protection for healthcare workers to receive Ebola suspected cases. The facility established five working missions for the prevention of the disease, as well as to be ready to support localities for any case of emergency and co-ordinate with related authorities to test suspected specimens. The city’s Health Department required the hospital to fully implement protective measures for staff directly involved in medical care and the treatment for patients, ensuring not to spread diseases to its medical staff. The hospital was urged to train its medical staff on Ebola diagnosis and the treatment regimen under the Ministry of Health’s guidance, while regularly inspecting waste disposal and sanitation within the hospital. The same day, Da Nang city authorities held an emergency meeting with the Da Nang Health Department and other related units on the prevention and control of epidemic caused by Ebola viruses. According to reports at the meeting, Da Nang Health Department has issued a co-ordination scheme on monitoring and handling any case of emergency, as well as developing a plan with funding of over VND15 billion (US$705,000) for the prevention and control of Ebola to submit to Da Nang municipal People’s Committee for approval. The department has directed the city’s Centre for International Health Quarantine to apply medical declarations for entrants coming from infected areas since August 12. Da Nang People’s Committee decided to retrofit an additional five cameras to check the body temperatures of all passengers entering the city via Da Nang Port and Da Nang International Airport. Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of Da Nang People’s Committee Huynh Duc Tho urged the city’s Health Department to regularly update information on the status of the Ebola epidemic and deploy aggressive inspection and disease control measures to not let the disease penetrate into the city. It should closely monitor visitors at the entry gates and in the community to enable the early detection of suspected cases to isolate them and give timely treatment.
