Nice hike in the Santa Monicas with pal Ogre- made it down to the Circle X grotto, ate egg salad (me) and peaches & windmill cookies (both of us), guzzled canteen water, kept upright on the big slippery slanted rocks in the dry river gorge. Well, mostly dry; there were some small clear pools, and hiding among the slurpy twigs and leaves, our radiant quarry, the California golden newt! We must have seen a dozen of these beautiful amphibians, loved them all from a distance (well, okay, I did pick up one chubby newt & returned it immediately to its pool). Nice day hiking, rock-hopping. Hell, I was so excited that after leaving Ohgr on the mountaintop, I went for my first dip of the summer in the placid Pacific just south of Zuma Beach. So what if the oceans crackling with Fukushima isotopes & buckyballs, the water was great! Hows your summer coming?
