Nice letter from Jeff Rosen at NCD to the mayors regarding next years ADA 25 celebrations: BY EMAIL TO:[email protected] August 1, 2014 Dear Mr. Johnson: As the Chairperson of the National Council on Disability (NCD), I seek the support of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in encouraging your member cities, especially large cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington D.C., to participate in the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) throughout the year 2015. NCD has had an integral role with respect to the drafting and implementation of the ADA - NCD first proposed the enactment of the ADA and then developed the initial legislation and is now assisting the President and his Administration on all matters surrounding the ADA celebrations in Washington, DC and around the country. Your encouragement of local Mayors to create celebrations of their own throughout the year and partnership with interested disability organizations, corporations, public employers, community organizations and individuals would be timely and advance the inclusion of people with disabilities into the community. There are numerous activities and efforts planned and underway around the celebration of the passage of the ADA twenty-five years ago: The ADA Legacy Project and Tour, including the Road To Freedom (ADA Bus) featuring historic disability photographs (adalegacy); a variety of arts- and education-based activities at The Kennedy Center; educational programs at the Smithsonian Institute(s); a disability narrative project with StoryCorps; and the ADA Anniversary Toolkit (adaanniversary.org). We would be happy to work with local Mayors Offices of People with Disabilities and other entities to coordinate national-to-local events. I ask you for your assistance in making the twenty-fifth anniversary of the ADAs passage a remarkably diverse, community-based and fully inclusive year that engages citizens of Americas citiesto celebrate all that people with disabilities have to offer. If you would like to discuss this further, I am most pleased to meet with you in this noble pursuit. Sincerely, Jeff Rosen, Chairperson National Council on Disability
